Does your makeup need a makeover?

As a woman, makeup has been an on-going topic since I was twelve-years-old begging my mother to let me wear blush and lipstick. There are some gals who are fortunate and confident enough to never need to wear makeup or want to, but for the rest of us who feel like our eyes disappear without mascara and our sun spots show without foundation---makeup is one of our best friends.

Lately, I've been looking through my makeup bag and not been too excited. It seems that I wear the same eye shadow, eye liner, mascara and bland lip gloss on a daily basis. Nothing fancy and nothing exciting. But honestly, this is my M.O. I like simple, flawless-looking skin. I must admit that when I see a gal with bold makeup that makes her eyes look like a mysterious sea, I want to be a little more bold with my facial palate. So, I decided to give myself a "makeup makeover" and here's how you can do it, too, with the first step---toss out the old and crusty!

Toss out the old and crusty!

Without exact expiration dates on makeup containers, we tend to hold onto old makeup way too long. But, here are a few trustworthy tips that will help prevent bacteria from growing in your makeup products and keep your face healthy:

Mascara & Eye Liner

Every time you put the mascara wand back into the tube, you're letting in bacteria and other germs. Mascara and eye liner have the shortest shelf life, so you need to replace them every 3-4 months. If your mascara dries or hardens after several months, toss it. Don't add water or saliva to it because that will only increase your chances of getting an eye infection. Eye pencils can last up to 2 years, but make sure to re-sharpen them each time you use it to prevent bacteria from spreading.

Eye Shadows

Powder eye shadow can last up to 2 years, but make sure to clean the applicators. Liquid eye shadow should only be used for one year or less. Make sure to toss all eye makeup products when you have developed an eye infection so that it will not come back after your eye has healed.

Liquid Foundation & Concealer

When you buy liquid foundation make sure to always store it in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and heat. Liquid foundation can last up to a year if stored correctly with the lid sealed after each use. If you have sensitive or acne-prone skin, don't dip your finger into the bottle. Apply with a brush or sponge, and don't double dip. These rules apply to both liquid foundation and concealers.

Lipstick & Lip Gloss

Most lip glosses are more liquid-based, which is prone to grow bacteria. The best rule is to only keep a lip gloss for up to 6 months max. Lipstick can last for a year because it is not liquid-based.

Powders & Blushes

Powders are safe to use for 18 months to 2 years, but make sure to toss them if the powder develops a strange smell or the color turns. Throw away any cream blushes after one year; powder blushes can last up to 2 years.

(extra tip - using clean brushes and sponges will lengthen the use of your cosmetics. Make sure to regularly wash applicators and replace them every few months. Write the date of when you opened the product on the back of the product so you can know how long you've had it and can toss it when it's no longer healthy to keep.)
