A Safe and Fun Trick or Treat!

I must admit that Halloween tends to scare me a little bit. As a child during the 80s, I grew up knowing everyone in my neighborhood and without a care in the world. But, we definitely live in a different world now where neighborhoods and people are not so trustworthy anymore. Just watching the nightly news makes me not want to send my toddler out the front door!
So, how do I still allow my child to enjoy the Fall festivities while keeping them safe? Here are a few tips for having a SAFE and FUN Halloween experience:
1. Daylight Hours - For babies and toddlers, it is always a good idea to take them trick or treating during daylight hours. (My 18-month-old son does not enjoy getting scared in the dark and neither do I. haha!)
2. Evening Hours with a Map - If you're going to take the elementary kids or teens out for an evening of trick or treating, I highly recommend that you print out a Google Map of your neighborhood and highlight in pink or green the route that is safe for all the kids to walk. Make sure to also mark in black the boundaries of the trick or treating area, so kids don't wander into an unfamiliar place.
3. Travel in Groups with a Buddy - If possible, it is ALWAYS better to walk in groups for trick or treating. Don't assume that one child by themselves or one parent/child pair will be safe. It's important to have a "Buddy System" where each child has a parent to walk with. If you're going to have a really big group send-off from your house, try writing down all the names of the children and which adult they will be paired with along with the cellphone number of that adult.
4. Flashlights & Cellphones - Make sure that each group or pair (adult/child) has a cellphone, flashlight and a neighborhood map.
5. Glow in the Dark - It's not just fun, but also a great safety measure to give kids glow-in-the-dark paraphernalia and glow sticks. This will make them stand out more in the dark and make it a FUN night!
6. Carry Whistles - Make sure each child or pair (adult/child) has a whistle that they can use in case of an emergency. (Maybe let the adult carry it so the kids don't go haywire blowing whistles! haha!)
7. Wet Wipes - It may sound ridiculous, but have a pack of wet wipes in your coat or purse ready for the kids to wipe their hands before chowing down their candy.
8. Eat a Good Dinner - Last but not least, eat a good dinner before Trick or Treating. This will fight off the munchies and also help the kiddos not have COMPLETE SUGER OVERLOAD!!! :)
